Ending The Plight Of Hungry Children in the Philippines

MALNUTRITION is a perennial problem in third world countries or in country’s with conflict and war. Although it can be classified into two types namely the undernourished and those with obesity, it cannot be compared to NCD’s or the Non Communicable Diseases hence it is not a lifestyle disease or a lifestyle and a disease.

In the country today, most children in the large cities like Metro Manila, we can see two faces of malnutrition, the children of the informal settlers lining in depressed conditions under the bridges, in slum areas near the ports or along the highways and in vacant lots along side the majestic sky scrapers of the central business districts, they are the undernourished group.

Stout yet thin, short for their age and underweight. These are the children we see often knocking on car windows when heavy traffic occur in major thoroughfares.

These are the children that the government eagerly wanted to help by way of putting funds for their proper nutrition though most Filipino’s doesn’t see it that way.

With this in mind, the Philippines’ Department of Health through their National Nutrition Council (DOH-NNC)and the Department of science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI)with the World Food Programme (WFP)with the aim to combat hunger in general, feeding the hungry in particular. Expert researches from food scientists from the DOST FNRI through the help of both DOH NNC and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)implemented by the WFP in specific target ares like in Mindanao, remote islands of the Visayas and mountainous parts of Luzon.

The FNRI’s complementary food and PINGGANG PINOY program in partnership with the private sector and several non government organizations become so successful that it has been adopted for commercialization especially in conflict and depressed ares.

The RIMO brand(fortified combination of rice (for carbohydrates) and monggo (for protein) curls giving sufficient nutrition like Iron and Zinc to augment for the lost nutrition of children 1 to 5 years.

July is the celebration of Nutrition Month, each year government agencies tasked of reducing malnutrition in children converged to formulate road map and implement programs geared toward.

As much as the government is doing its share in alleviating hunger and in the process to SAVE THE CHILDREN form malnutrition, all their efforts is directed to the undernourished but an alarming threat is also looming on the increasing number of obese children and because these group belongs mostly to the middle and upper middle class, the government has limited programs for them hence they end up having NCD’s at a young age.

In advent of the government’s continuing war on illegal drugs, some of the casualties of the OPLAN TOKHANG and DOUBLE BARREL RELOADED aren’t the drug pushers and users or the small time drug lords instead are the orphan children going hungry because their parents are being executed legally by sworn authorities mandated to protect their welfare. (MJ Olvina-Balaguer,09053611058, maryjaneolvina@gmail.com)
