PDIC brings media education initiative to Bataan

PDIC strengthens partnership with Bataan local media. The Philippine Deposit Insurance
Corporation (PDIC) sustained its regional campaign for enhanced public awareness
through the conduct of “PDIC 101: Understanding Deposit Insurance”, a media education
initiative in Balanga City, Bataan on October 9, 2026. The press conference was led by
PDIC President and CEO Roberto B. Tan (seated, 2nd from left) and Corporate Affairs
Group Vice President Jose G. Villaret, Jr. (seated, leftmost), with PDIC Director Luis Rey I.
Velasco (seated, 3rd from left) also joining the discussions and engaging with members
of the local media. Conducted in partnership with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)
Region III and the PIA Bataan Provincial Information Center, “PDIC 101” forms part of the
agencies’ continuing collaboration to leverage the media’s extensive reach in promoting
the importance of saving in banks, enhancing public understanding of deposit insurance,
and strengthening confidence in the Philippine banking system.

The Philippine banking system remains strong and nearly 99 percent of deposit accounts
in the system are now fully protected by deposit insurance. The message was highlighted
during the conduct of the “PDIC 101: Understanding Deposit Insurance”, a press
conference and media education initiative led by the Philippine Deposit Insurance
Corporation (PDIC).
Held in Balanga City, Bataan, the latest run of PDIC 101 formed part of the continuing
collaboration between the PDIC and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) to educate
the public and foster partnerships with local media. The activity brought together
members of the media in Bataan and representatives from the PIA Bataan Provincial
Information Center to discuss the PDIC’s mandates as the state deposit insurer,
co-regulator of banks, and receiver of closed banks.

In his message during the event, PDIC President and CEO Roberto B. Tan emphasized the
important role of media in helping broaden public understanding of deposit insurance and
responsible banking. “As media practitioners, you play an essential role as truth-tellers
and community educators. Through your stories and reports, you bridge the gap between
financial regulation and the public’s understanding of how their money is protected,”
Mr. Tan said.
The PDIC 101 initiative forms part of the Corporation’s broader public awareness
campaign designed to reach various stakeholder groups, including the media.
Through their extensive reach and engagement with local communities, media
organizations serve as PDIC’s valuable partners in promoting depositor protection and
reinforcing public confidence in the Philippine banking system.
The 2026 sessions of PDIC 101 are a proactive sequel since the PDIC did the rounds with
media last year to share the good news of the increase in the maximum deposit insurance
coverage (MDIC) to P1 million per depositor, per bank effective March 15, 2025.
More than a year since the new MDIC took effect, the banking system remains sound and
even more depositors are fully protected.
During the PDIC 101 session in Balanga City, PDIC Vice President Jose G. Villaret, Jr.
(Corporate Affairs Group) informed that deposit accounts in the Philippine banking system
totaled to 190.9 million as of end-June 2026, growing by 20.5 percent from the
158.5 million deposit accounts as of end-June 2025. Of this total, 98.9 percent are within
the MDIC and are fully covered by deposit insurance, signifying that more depositors
benefit from the expanded protection brought by the new MDIC.
Meanwhile, total deposits grew by 8.0 percent, reaching P22.2 trillion as of end-June
2026 from P20.6 trillion during the same period in 2025. In terms of deposit amount,
24.3 percent of total deposits are fully covered by the MDIC, placing the Philippines within
the internationally accepted benchmark of insuring approximately 20 to 30 percent of
total deposits.
Zooming in on the bank deposit data in Region III (Central Luzon) and Bataan, the PDIC
shared the good news that deposits in the region grew in terms of number of accounts
and the amount of total deposits from June 2025 to June 2026. Region III accounted for
4.1 percent of the total deposit accounts in the Philippine banking System and 5.8 percent
of total deposits. In Bataan, total deposits grew by 10.7 percent, from P70.0 billion in June
2025 to P77.5 billion in June 2026, while the number of deposit accounts increased by
6.8 percent or 40,545 accounts, reflecting expansion in both depositor base and deposit
mobilization in the province.
Since 2024, the PDIC and PIA have jointly conducted PDIC 101 sessions across the
country to increase public awareness of deposit insurance and the benefits of saving in
banks. Through this partnership, both agencies support the government’s financial
inclusion agenda and help Filipinos make more informed financial decisions.
In August 2026, the PDIC 101 for national media was held at the PIA office in Quezon City.
This was followed by the Visayas run in Tagbilaran City, Bohol on September 10, 2026.
After the Luzon leg this October, PDIC 101 will complete its regional conduct for the year
through a session in Surigao City in November.
