MANILA — The ASEAN Cultural Center was formally inaugurated on August 9, 2026, at the historic Metropolitan Theater, marking a landmark step in fostering regional cultural cooperation and appreciation across Southeast Asia.
The ceremony was graced by Her Excellency Louise Araneta-Marcos, First Lady of the Philippines, and H.E. U San Lwin, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for the Socio-Cultural Community, who served as Guests of Honour.
Also in attendance were Ambassadors of ASEAN Member States, members of the diplomatic corps, and key cultural officials including Mr. Jeremy Barns, Executive Director of the National Museum.
In his opening remarks, H.E. U San Lwin highlighted the importance of shared cultural heritage in strengthening ASEAN unity. The official inauguration followed through a ceremonial ribbon-cutting led by the First Lady, H.E. U San Lwin, and Mr. Eric B. Zerrudo, Chairperson of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Established by the NCCA, the ASEAN Cultural Center serves as a dedicated venue to showcase, preserve, and explore the rich artistic and cultural heritage of all ASEAN nations. It features displays and artifacts representing the diverse traditions across the region. Distinguished diplomats present included H.E. Daw Ei Ei Tin of Myanmar, H.E. Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino of Malaysia, and H.E. Mrs. Makawadee Sumitmor of Thailand and H.E. Marciano Da Silva of the Embassy of Timor-Leste.. Also in attendance were Carmen V. Liwanag of Bayanihan Dancers and Architect Michael Liwanag of the Museum Foundation. Following the inauguration, guests were treated to a series of traditional cultural performances from ASEAN countries, followed by a formal reception. The center stands as a lasting platform for cultural exchange, creativity, and closer bonds among the peoples of ASEAN.
